IRS agents are not political appointees. IRS agents are civil servants who work to solve the puzzle “How Much Do You Actually Owe” under the federal tax code. Geeks; good government types; maybe even sometimes bullies; but not partisans. These IRS agents were just doing their job. The Whole Point of the IRS is to make sure people are paying the taxes they owe.
Sometimes, your group can be excused from having to pay taxes – BUT IF AND ONLY IF the IRS says you can be excused from paying taxes because you proved that you are going to do something good for everyone with the money you save on your tax bill. To get excused, you can send in an application to the IRS – the IRS reviews it, analyzes it and either approves it or sends it back for more questions.
